Abstract

Hawaiian tropical dry forests are vanishing and there is desperate need to develop new strategies and approaches to save and restore such forests. The foggy weather conditions in the Hawaiian Islands make possible the utilization fog collection nets to increase water input for afforestation in dry areas of the islands. In this paper we proposed a novel approach for dry forest restoration in Hawaii: adopting fog collection technology combined with plantings of both native and noninvasive exotic species. This approach addresses promoting ecosystem function, rather than conserving individual species. Implementation of such an approach requires a philosophy of integrity and innovation, public-private cooperation, and network-based adaptive management.
